PSMC Burch Bay Fireworks Ride
17/04/09

ride to Burch Bay in the upper most nw corner of the Puget Sound area. Then have
dinner and ride back on I 5 just a dusk and view the area fireworks.

I joined the ride at the Edison lunch stop. I found a group of around 18 riders. After
lunch we continued North via Chuckanut drive. Thru Bellingham and some nice
scenic ocean side beach road around Portage and Lummi Bay.

We arrived in Burch Bay and found large crowds on the beach. It was still early for
dinner so we continued on to Blaine and spent a little time on the water front with a
view of the Canada and the Peace Arch. We decided to have dinner in Blaine and
found a great Mexican joint with a very friendly and fun waiter. If you are in Blaine
looking for someplace to eat check out
Paso del Norte. Blaine appears to be a good
place to stop for some refreshment as there are 4 or 5 Bars, Grills, Thai joints all on
one or two blocks along the water.

After lunch most of the riders headed back via I 5. The last 3 of us headed back to
Burch Bay for a short ride along the beach. We were there just in time for a great
sunset. The fireworks were just getting started and the beach was covered with a
layer of fireworks smoke. Roman Candles, Mortars, Bottle Rocks they were flying
everywhere.

We beat a path back to I 5 and headed south. Timing is critical on this as you want to
get to the fireworks areas before they are all shot off. As we approached Bellingham
the hills were covered in local fireworks and our timing look pretty good. That was
until we came to a stop on the freeway. The state patrol had closed the freeway due
to and accident and we were detoured thru Bellingham. So that thru us 20 minutes or
so off our schedule. So I think we missed the best of the fireworks.

But it was a fun ride and worth a repeat next year. We may want to narrow the
fireworks freeway portion to a smaller area?
