| Cycle Barn Rat Ride to Clarkston Wa. 06/26-28/09 I almost missed it this year. The Cycle Barns Rat Group ride to Clarkston Wa. It is the annual early summer ride to the Lo Lo pass area. I had cancelled my motel reservations for several reasons. But at the last minute I decided I had to go. I could not miss the first real summer weather and ride of the year. So I headed out late afternoon on Friday. Most of the rest of the group had gone that morning. I would go to Colfax Washington and spend the night at my cousins and meet the Rat Riders Saturday morning. Left my cousin's around 6:30 for the 45 mile or so ride to Clarkston. It was a cool but comfortable ride thru the Palouse Wheat country. Beautiful green rolling hills and a easy winding road. Most of my fellow city riders do not appreciate that area. But as an old farm boy and coming from a farm back ground I see it different. I rolled in as everyone was preparing for the days ride. Having cancelled earlier they were all surprised to see me. The last 2 years of this ride was over Lo Lo pass. This year there were 3 or 4 separate rides to chose from. One was Lo Lo pass with an over night in Montana. There were 2 other Lo Lo rides that would return to Clarkston. One was a warp speed Lo Lo ride. The other to a hot spring somewhere along the way. I was going on the 4th option which was a loop east to Elk City and back. |

| that the Lo Lo ride might have been better. But we were soon to find that we made the right choice. It was our first time on Idaho Hwy 14 and we all agreed that it was one of the best (maybe the best) road we have ever ridden on. On the return we hit Idaho It was a fantastic loop. We had planned on a run down the Rattlesnake Grade South of Clarkston on the way back. But Winchester wore us out and after 300 miles or so most of us elected to call it a day. One other rider rode to Enterprise Oregon and back. We gave him the iron butt award for the day. |
The weather and the rides were fantastic. Sunday we wandered home in 3 or 4 different groups taking different routes. Everybody is looking forward to next year. |
| narrow and full of twisties. Everyone was taking early and late runs up it at every chance. For me I ride it once or twice but it has way more tight corners then I like. But that is just me most love it. The pavement is excellent and clean. Below is a map of the Winchester grade. It also is a narrow tight and twisty road. Several tight corners without guard rails and long drops. The pavement can be rough and watch for gravel |
