X Men Spring Opener Winthrop
05/29-31/09

May be we are going to have a summer this year? It is about time. The X Men and
Women gathered at Winthrop for the Spring Opener. We gathered all day as some
still had to work. 3 tents and 2 cabins.

Tony and I meet at Rockport around 9:30 for a short ride to Marblemount and
breakfast at the little
eatery at Clark's Cabins resort. Then we headed east on Hwy
20. The traffic was light and the weather great. As we hit the summit at Washington
Pass there was some snow and the view point was not open. It was not very cold and
we removed some clothing in preparation for the hot weather on the east side.

When we got to Winthrop we went straight to the Koa to check in and arrange for
everyone to be together. KOA rearranged things so we were all  right together. After
unloading and setting up Tony's tent we rode downtown for an ice cream cone.

We were dressed in T Shirts and Shorts but decided to take a little run north of town.
The first time in many years I have ridden any distance without any gear. I found then
that my Honda St does put out some heat in 90 degree weather.

Heading north on Chewuch rd we
went around 20 miles. There are
many campgrounds and some Falls.
It is a nice scenic ride.

On the way back we noticed another
road that we suspected came back to
Winthrop a little north of town. We did
not try it but it would have made a
nice local loop. It is shown on the
map to the left.

Most of the rest our riders made it in
later in the day. We had dinner at a
They had a pretty good cowboy They
had a pretty good cowboy singing for
us. The food was good but perhaps a
bit pricey.
Friday night was a good party at the KOA in X Men fashion. Saturday morning I took
a solo run up the the Sunridge Resort. That is a very nice ride but watch for the deer.
Later the group took the fire road to Twisp for breakfast and Antlers. It was a bit of a
surprise to find a large open table. But we did and the breakfast was great.

From there some were going back to spend a day in town. A few of us headed up
Loup Loup pass to the summit and a visit to the ski area. After that everyone but me
went back to Winthrop. I continued east on Loup Loup for a nice but short loop back
via hwy 153. Along the way I crossed paths with a couple riders I know and stopped
for a short visit.

Dinner that night was in a close by small, warm, but very good pizza joint. We
followed that with another X Men evening social.

Sunday we packed up and everyone headed out in different directions home. We
had one member who was still sleeping when we left. But we got word later that he
was ok and made it home.
