05/14-19/09 The PNW Road Riders Spring Break is an annual multi day ride. This year was to be our longest and most ambitious to date. Little did we know that we would experience some of the best and worst riding in our history. Wednesday afternoon was a getaway day for a lot of us. There were a couple rides going that day to get out of town. Mine was a meeting with Bill, and Doug in Woodburn, Or. Bill got going earlier as he does not have to work. Doug and I headed out around noon. I meet Doug at the Pilot truck stop south of Tumwater. From there we had the wettest ride ever. Not sure about Doug but I know that is the wettest ride I have ever done. It rained the whole way. When we got to the Motel the lady at the front desk just handed us our keys and said clean up then come back to register. No need to map this day. Some had planned longer and more scenic getaways. But all slabbed it due to weather. Thursday was really the start of the ride for us with Grants Pass as our destination. I had planned a fully back road route from Woodburn. But that was a pretty long ride. So we ran down I5 to south of Albany then headed west for the back road ride. The route then wandered back and fourth all the way down to Grants Pass. This was very complicated route without a GPS with many intersections. We made a couple wrong turns but the area was so rich in roads that each wrong turn led us to a possible better road and came back to the path somewhere. Bill and I decided we would need to come back for a weekend and explore all the back roads we were seeing. This was a spectacular ride.

Friday from Grants Pass we were planning on taking the road to Happy Camp. As we unpaved detour. Hmm. We decided to ride it anyway. As it turns out 20 miles takes us over the pass and over the best part of the road. We did find the road closure. At 10 or so that morning after the huge rains the detour was a steep muddy road. A couple of pickups were there and said you need a 4x4. So we headed back for a return to 199 on the Happy Camp road. It was 40 or 50 blissful miles on a great motorcycle road. We did have a second group that did the same road in the afternoon. They took the detour as it had dried out somewhat by then. We continued on via 199, 101 and 299 to Weaverville. All pretty much a nice hwy ride.
Saturday from Weaverville we took south bound Hwy 3 to Hwy 36 and headed east to Red Bluff. Hwy 3 is spectacular and twisty heading south to Hwy 36. Hwy 36 heading east may even be twistier. You can be affected motion sickness on these roads. Towards Red Bluff they throw in a good section of ups and downs with quick succession of little hills and valleys. A great Roller Coaster ride. We returned on a portion of 36 and turned north towards the trinity dam area. This was another spectacular day. We wondered how it could get any better. We would find on Sunday that with 2 days still left the ride was really over.
were going on to Yreka for the night. Midway on the Hwy 3 ride we had the first accident. Dave lost it on a corner on Hwy 3. He at the time was sore but he felt he was ok. His bike was damaged and had a broken rad hose. We tried to fix the rad hose but Dave could not ride. So we spent several hours arranging transportation to Yreka. Dave later found out he had a broken scapula. After we got Dave and the Yreka group of the 4 of us left to continue our Hwy 3 Cecilville loop. Not long after that we were hit with accident 2. Bill hit a brick size rock that was in a dark shadow. He was airlifted to Redding and spent a few days in ICU . Bill had 3 broken ribs, broke collar bone, and a totaled bike. But otherwise everyone is ok. We were to have 2 more days of riding to get home on Monday and Tuesday. But Monday was a day to visit Bill and then head up the road. The ride was spectacular until Sunday
