| Fossil 2007. (May 25-28) Could this be the year? Fossil has been plauged in the last several years with not so good weather. Could this be the year for some good weather? I was down that way a few weeks ago. The weather was fantastic then. Could this be the year? Check out the Maupin and John Day Videos. Fossil 2006. All who were at Fossil in 06 can proudly claim. "I SURVIVED FOSSIL 06". The promoters did a great job. Lots of good bands playing well into the night. A great poker run Sunday. There were fewer vendors but the food ones that were there did a good job and stayed open late. The weather however was another matter. Friday thru Sunday with the exception of a few hours Saturday afternoon was a horror story. While it did not rain all the time it was one rain storm after another. Throw in some high winds and hail. When I arrived at Fossil on Friday I was greeted with 1 inch of standing hail on the highway at Fossil. The site was in a continual state of mud. Once you were in on your bike you were not going anywhere. Part of the days entertainment was watching bikes go down then pushing them out. One wind storm had us holding down our canopies and tents while others were getting blown over. Fortunately the weather cleared on Monday. Drying us up enough to get away. I will be back next year? |
| >>>>WROTE FOR 1ST RIDE 2003<<<< The campout site is just outside of Fossil, Oregon. I was drawn there several years ago because I used to live in Condon, Oregon. I needed an excuse to visit the old town I lived in when I was 16. As I was cruising south towards Fossil I was thinking this event would be at the fair grounds or something like that. But just short of Fossil everyone was turning off the road. There was a sign saying Campout. So I turned off the road. I then saw it. A winding dirt road up into a beautiful canyon. Surrounded by low rocky cliffs. All over were tents, bikes, campsites, and some rvs. I thought “the hole in the wall gang” The site had an area they called downtown. A Stage and vendors. I found a flat spot and setup my tent. It was time for a beer so I walked downtown and found a beer vendor. Cans of Bud or Bud light were $1.50 (holy crap a buck fifty). I loaded my vest up with 3 or 4. That was a few years ago. They have not had a beer vendor since so you need to bring your own. The Bands played till early morning. They are usually pretty good. I have never seen the last song. But I have always heard it. Lying in my sleeping bag and wondering what time it is. I will hear the last song then it seems like the sun is coming up. Every year I swear that I am just going to hang around the fire pit all night long. So far no luck. There are some bike events at the fairgrounds. Oregon has some great motorcycle roads and there are several great loops around Fossil. It is on Memorial Day. I suggest getting there Friday for a great Friday, Saturday party. I then go home Sunday so I can rest Monday. |
