Pelican Run 2008.
Date 04/12-13

The Pelican Run was born a few years ago with a Saturday lunch ride from Seattle to the Pelican Brew
Pub in Pacific City Oregon. The ride is organized thru the
PNW Road Riders a Yahoo Group. It is now a
2 day ride with and overnight stay at Pacific City Oregon.

Could this be the beginning of Summer? Friday the sun came out the Magnolia trees bloomed. Man this
is looking like summer could it be? In addition the forecast was looking great for the weekend. I meet with
4 or 5 riders at the Lynnwood Jack In the Box. We picked up another rider at Tacoma an headed South.
Slogging down I 5 we meet the rest of the group and Oregon riders at a Starbucks in St Helens Oregon.

Mark and Paul our Oregon ride
leaders lead us thru some fantastic
back country roads. Winding up
down and around the roads west of
St Helens and South of the Columbia
River. I was again envious of the
great and lightly traveled back roads
of Oregon.

It was fun and short ride West to
Clatskanie and Humps restaurant.
There were several more bikes out
front but none were with our group.
After lunch we headed South over
hwy 47 which some call Oregon's
Dragons Tail. For the rest of the after
noon we road many spectacular
Oregon back roads. Winding
ourselves to Pacific City Oregon.
The temps were in the high 70's and
the sun was out the whole time.

Sunday began with what I think is
standard coastal weather cloudy and
cool. We headed south on 101 to
Lincoln City. After a great breakfast
for 10 we gassed up and swung East
on the Selitz River Rd. This is the
same route as last year. But the
Selitz River Rd seems to be one of
those that you cannot miss if in the
area. At
Selitz we take Logsden
which is another fantastic ride. Just
be ready for the few miles of gravel
portion in the middle?

From there we headed up the Kings
Valley to Dallas. At this point I and
several other Washington riders
head home. The ride ended in some
pretty heavy rain in Seattle and out
brief taste of good weather was over.

I think this was the best Pelican Run
yet. The group was great with around
12 to 13 bikes. Weather was fantastic
and the roads spectacular. I would
suspect that the run will retain the name
Pelican. While we did ride by the
Pelican we did not stop. I did take a
picture of it.

The small lounge at the motel was
again great but closes early. The Pub
and Grub tavern was fun and had great
food. A few of us almost closed it. Some
did not come in thinking to much
smoke. But it was fine. Yes as you
walked in you did smell it. But I don't
remember anyone smoking and all
there said it was fine. Next year I hear
Oregon will be smokeless?
