WeStoc 2008 Taos New Mexico (Part 1)
Date 06/2108-06/30/08

WeStoc is the annual St1300 rally. It is held at a different location every year. For 2008 it was Taos New
Mexico. That was perfect for me. I have always wanted to ride the South West and had missed a
planned ride in 2007. So 2008 was to be a redo and I made it.

There were 2 of us starting from Seattle and would be a couple others joining us along the way. Friday
we joined in with a Cycle Barn ride to Clarkston Idaho for a Lo Lo pass ride. Friday was pretty much a
transition ride from Seattle to Clarkston. Perhaps a hundred miles of fun roads. The rest just a ride to
get there.

Sonny's in Wastucna always makes an interesting lunch stop. The food is pretty good and it may be the
only place to eat in the area.

Saturday was the ride up Lo Lo pass.
The Cycle Barn group was going up
and back. We were going to continue
on the Arco Idaho for Saturday night.

The famous sign at Lo Lo that says
"curves for the next 77" miles was
gone? I think they could really have a
sign earlier that says curves the next
120 miles. The ride up Idaho Highway
12 is pretty much mild twisty curves
along the river and thru the mountains.

It was a beautiful weather day and the
traffic was pretty light. We continued on
past the summit and met another
WeStoc rider in Lolo Montana. After
some lunch we continued on to Arco
Idaho for the night.

Sunday was to be pretty much another transition day. Get from Arco Idaho to Moab Utah. Around 500 miles with really no
great motorcycle roads. I have been thru Salt Lake only once before and remember it as a long way. That was 2 years
ago and they were working on the road then. Well they are still working on the road. I found out that it is even further
when you are not in an air conditioned car.

We finally made it to Spanish Forks and headed south east on highway 6. There are a few nice motorcycle areas there
but only a few. I now started to get my first taste of 100 degree riding. I did have a mesh jacket but nothing else. I would
later learn about camelbacks. It has always amazed me that we have tons of rest stops with shaded areas here in
western Washington. But when you get to hot areas it seems not many rest stops and not much (if any) shade is
provided?
We made it to Moab for Sunday night. For me the real ride was to start here. To this point the Lo Lo pass ride was
great. Most of the rest and 2 days were what I consider transition days. Some riders do not like to do that but
sometimes I believe you just need to get from here to there. Yes there are always alternative routes they usually
require more time then you have. But for the next week it will all be about the ride.

Monday was to be a shorter mileage day but all on nice road. We were on our way to Durango Colorado via Highway
550. It was a great ride to Hwy 550 and Ridgway. But then Murphy came by and made it rain on us. Highway 550
looked like a fantastic ride if you had good weather. Little unnerving riding up a narrow mountain highway with no
shoulder or guard rail in hard rain. They rain tried to turn to snow at the top but we made it over the summit. The
south side was new pavement most of the way down. So definitely something I have to ride again.
