PNW Road Riders AAA 2008
Date 09/26/08 09/29/08

AAA stands for Annual Autumn Adventure. It is a 4 day ride we do late summer or early fall. This year
the official ride was to Maupin Or for Friday. Roseburg Oregon for Saturday. Eugene Oregon for
Sunday then home on Monday.  It was a modification of the original idea to go straight to Roseburg for 2
days of riding around Crater Lake and southern Oregon and Northern California routs.

This is were I separated from the group as I wanted to do the Southern routes rather then the Maupin
area that we had done earlier. Also a couple of our group consider it a sin to waste a day on the
freeway. I on the other hand will invest a day to get far away fast.
So I said I will meet you in Roseburg
Saturday. So Friday went straight
down I 5 south to Grants Pass. My St
1300 is equally happy and
comfortable on the freeway so I had
no problem.

Saturday I ran SW on 199 and took
the Happy Camp Road over the
Siskiyous. It was a beautiful day and
the weather held for the whole
weekend. Happy Camp road was
clear of any traffic except for the 3
other motorcycle riders I meet at the
top and a couple of deer I saw.

From Happy Camp I headed east on
California Hwy 96. Both of these were
first time roads for me. That was the
benefit of the Friday slab. To get to
new territory.

A little more I5 heading north to the Rouge River area. From there I looped around to Hwy 62 and up to
Hwy 227.
Hwy 227 was one of the main destinations for me on this day and it was fantastic. Great to
good pavement with all types of twisties and some long high speed stretches on the North end. I
connected that night with the rest of my group at Roseburg.
We returned over 227 on Sunday
for our south east loop to Crater
Lake. Heading south on 227 I did
find a spot or 2 that you need to
watch your speed. You can end up
coming off a 100 plus mph straight
away into a 20 mph corner.

We ran most of the Crater Lake
loop. It had bee suggested that we
do the loop counter clockwise. We
did most of the loop clockwise then
turned around to head north. The
counter clockwise seemed to give
a much better view from the road.

After Crater we continued east on
Hwy 138. Another great ride. We
were about to enter the Lost Zone.
Our final leg to Eugene was to
go over some PAVED forest
service roads. The route as
planned by Steve did that.

But the group was a little spread
out at that time and the last 3
bikes missed the turn. We
continued on and it was a very
nice ride right up to the point
that the pavement ended.

We thought this was normal and
it would resume shortly. But
many miles later we were well in
the Oregon gravel road back
woods. We even found a couple
ladies in a car lost as well. I think
the video to the left tells the
story pretty well.
